Blend tool pros: awesome at blends

Blend tool cons: not so great at creating a perfect circle, drawing a path, or adding multiple strokes to a path

Or maybe I misunderstand your question? If so, please clarify!

    Robert,

In addition to what Michael said, together with gradients and meshes, blends have an important place in the range of appearances/styles, and they also have special uses such as enabling even distribution of undistorted objects along curved paths.

The blend tool gives you the ability to create variable gradations in color that the gradient tools cannot (Gradient tool being only linear or radial where the blend tool can "bend" the colors as they change shape or position). Gradient Mesh took this power to a whole new level though when it came out.

Blends can be done between shapes as well as colors.

Blends can be separated out onto layers and animated.

Blends can be created across multiple objects, allowing for some interesting changes

Blends have a "spine" which can be manipulated, or substituted for interesting effects.

Blends can be used to distribute objects across a distance.
