What are these "handles" on the client provided artwork/pattern?

Recieved client artwork/pattern. There are these two "handles" on the top and bottom and it allows me to modify the pattern directly on the artboard without having to go inside the pattern and mess with the settings. What are these and where can I find them/turn them on when it comes to my own patterns, in the future? Please see attached screenshot.
