What did they do to my Text tool and how do I change it back?

When I edit text, instead of a nice cursor, now I’m now getting a [T] or (T) loaded with garbage text I don’t want. I just want to insert my cursor or double-click a word, etc. like every other graphic design program on the planet.

How do I undo this mess?

The layer underneath text is locked. I’ve been working on this file in the same way for months. Always have had a T for a cursor same as InDesign. Now we’re getting a third new look in the pasteboards (an off-center boxed [  T] and depending on where I insert in text, I get a (T) or [T].

If there is no selectable text below the cursor, then you do not get that T cursor. Just based on your screenshot it is not possible to tell.

Or is perhaps "Select text by path only" turned on in the Preferences?

macOS Monterey 12.6.3

Adobe Illustrator 24 version 28.0

It started this afternoon. It feels awkward, unnessary, and hard to use.

First one is the normal cursor for creating a new text. Second one is the cursor when hovering over a path.

Did you convert that text to outlines? Or is the layer locked?
