What is the best way to embed files in illustrator to keep high speed

I have some problems with the speed of the illustrator. In an earlier post, I recognized that it was all dropbox fault. It looks like not really. The program is fast once, other times there is lag on the same file.

What's the best way to import files to keep the program as fast as possible?

Facts:

  1. Local storage, no more remote drives
  2. A4, 10 pages, 300 ppi, CMYK ai document, preview default
  3.  Files to be included in the document:
    1. 5x TIFF ~ 20MB(OSX) / ~90MB (size given by photoshop) 6000x6000px @ 300ppi
    2. 5x PNG with transparency ~ 24MB(OSX) / ~100MB (size given by photoshop) 9000x9000 px @ 72ppi

What's the best way to work with such assets? Convert? Compress? Decompress? Embedd? linking? Scale in photoshop? Scale in illustrator?

The target design is fairly simple, it doesn't use any complicated effects (maybe a little shadow), but as you can see, I have a high-quality source material and the client requires high-quality previews.

The file runs super-fast sometimes, sometimes with one-second lag on each action. Computer restarts have no effect on speed.

System: Possible least cluttered newest osx with newest adobe. No antivirus or background programs. The machine is strictly dedicated to adobe. The minimum number of fonts.

To keep Illustrator fast you should link, and use .psd which has nonlossy compression and is updated format not like the old .tif format or even worse .eps.

If you have more pixels than you need than YES scale in photoshop to make smaller, we had to do that all the time for large scale graphics. You can also crop in Photoshop for more speed if there is a significant amount of pixels to crop.

Save as & turn OFF pdf compatible if you are not placing in InDesign or After Effects.
