What is the reason behind 7 character hex code input?

In Illustrator, Why do we need this extra character for hex code input.

I only have 6 digits for hex code input (in Photoshop as well).

I don't see the color picker closing after wrong input

Use the tab key after entering the code to keep the picker open.

The color picker closes automatically after wrong input. Which is not so easy to learn.

Illustrator has 7, photoshop has 8, indesign seems to have no limit.

Looks like a coding oversight to me.
