What older versions of Illustrator files can the current versions open?

Many, many years ago I took some graphic design classes. I upgraded as far as Illustrator Version 7.0. I hope to get back into using Illustrator but I will not  have time to use it enough to make a subscription in the current Illustrator worthwhile.

For now, when I can find the time, I would like to use my Ai V7 on an older computer so I can regain some of my skills in computer illustration. Is the latest version of Illustrator able to open files from Illustrator Version 7? IF so, will I then be able to work on my older version files in the current version of Illustrator and save them in the new version of Illustrator?

Yes, the latest version is able to open older version files and work with them.

Saving them from a newer version to an older version can give you problems.
