When adding blur to a shape it adds white square shape behind it - Illustrator 2026

When adding gaussian blur to a shape it creates a large white square behind shape. It cannot be selected and only disappears when the blur is removed from shape. This is the latest version of illustrator and it appears the same in the previous version.

    Like Barbara mentioned, this can be caused by an option in the Document Raster Effect Settings.

    But be careful, currently changing this Background setting from White to Transparent and clicking OK does not update the preview. You need to turn the Blur Effect Off and On again in the Appearance panel to refresh the preview.

    I’m not able to replicate this issue.

    Check Effect > Document Raster Effect Settings and make sure that Background Transparent is chosen.
