Question

When I "join paths" I get self intersecting paths

When I “join path” with a path that looks good (but obviously isn't) It creates paths with self intersecting lines… (paths that loop back around) How can I prevent this?  With a plug in, I can see open paths but can’t see a way for illustrator to show where the break in the path actually is…?

    ipanema,

As I (mis)understand it, the lines start and end at at breaks, literally pointing to them.

You can try to see whether an easy solution may be to select the paths and then apply the Join Reasonably script.

You can find it in the free set of scripts by 佐藤浩之 (Satō Hiroyuki), either here or here,

    https://github.com/shspage/illustrator-scripts/tree/master/etc

    https://shanfan.github.io/Illustrator-Scripts-Archive/

To see whether you have open paths, you can use the Document Info palette looking for objects.

Could you provide some screen shots showing what is happening? Are all of the paths involved closed paths?
