White space between smooth anchor points

I am trying to trace a hand drawn image to turn into a vector drawing.  Every time I start a new path, a white space is created from the first anchor point of the path to the last anchor point, covering any path segments previously drawn that fall in that area.  Is there a setting that can turn off this white space that covers/blocks these overlapping areas?
