Why are my AI layers merging after I save?

After years of using Illustrator, all of a sudden my layers are merging after I save. ( .ai) When I re open I lose all of my text editing abilites. Is there something I'm missing? I can't get a hold of any Adobe Support.

ai also means artificial intelligence.
