Why are my linked images on an external server not automatically relinking when I reopen a file?

I work for a large corporate company and I’m linking to images in Sharepoint. When I close my .ai file and reopen it all the links are broken and I have to manually relink every image. There is a pop up messages that says it cannot find the plug-in to relink the images. I’m not sure where I can download this? They are also not automatically relinking after I link one. Does anyone know how to fix this?
