Why can't I use clipping mask?

I am doing a project where I recreated the Matrix digital rain. I have all the text (4 different boxes) and expanded and the box I'm trying to fit them to is above the text, but for some reason it's not letting me clip? I've tried switching placement, not expanding the text, uniting the texts, but nothing has worked.
