why does a copied item lock to the original item in illustrator?

Hello all,

I was wondering if anyone else gets this, if i copy an item in illustrator it seems to lock to the origianl so if i move the copy it moves the original aswell?!??!

Does anyone know how i stop this?

On top of what Doug wrote, there is the possibility that this is caused by third party apps on your system. So if you are using a Mac, do you also have a Window manager installed?

Does this happen to all objects, or just certain ones? Can you share a screenshot of these objects including the structure of the selection in the Layers panel?
