Why does the canvas not shrink in AI when I do a Ctrl - like it does in Photoshop?

I'm using the latest version, but even in CS6, it didn't work. Only the 10x10 image I'm working on does shrink or get larger using Ctrl + or -, but not the outside edges of the workspace. Is there a way to turn that on?  I'm sorry if I'm using the wrong terminology for each of the areas. Basically, when I do a Ctrl +, I want the design AND the outside edges to get smaller, too, so I don't have to keep messing and trying to get the edges where I want them.

    I'm sorry for my question. I"m OK and will just work around it. I'll use the spacebar and move the object around, and just keep moving the whole artboard when I need to. Just so weird that the rulers aren't right next to the area I'm working with and I have to keep adjusting that big artboard to see where I'm at. I'm just so used to my Photoshop shortcuts and am new to illustrator and I seem to be missing some very basic things I could do in Photoshop.

    Do you know if it is at all possible to use Photoshop brushes in Illustrator?  I dropped them in the folder with the others and Illustrator doesn't seem to recognize them. I've searched online and get conflicting answers.

    The tool set in Adobe Illustrator is mostly vector-based. Photoshop brushes are raster/pixel-based. There is a Brushes tab in Illustrator, but that contains brushes that are vector-based or a hybrid of a pixel-based image that is warped along a vector path.

    Are you talking about the animated zoom when using Ctrl-Alt-Spacebar keyboard combinations? Adobe Illustrator only enables animated zoom when GPU acceleration is enabled. In Illustrator CC there is a little Rocket icon along the top menu bar at the far right. Click that icon to bring up the dialog box to enable or disable GPU performance. There is an option in that dialog box to enable animated zoom.

    it sounds like you're describing your artboard resizing as you change zoom levels, but i'm pretty sure that's impossible. what do you have to keep resizing as you zoom? what 'edges' are you adjusting?

    Yes the artboard.  I'm zooming in and out of something I'm drawing.  I figured it was impossible as I've searched everywhere.  Thank you!

    let's get this right:

    1. you have a 10x10 (in some units) artboard with some kind of content.

    2. you use ctrl - to zoom out.

    3. your artboard size is no longer 10x10 units.

    4. you use the artboard tool (shift+0) and resize it.

    if this is right, i can't reproduce this.
