Why don't Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V work in Illustrator?

When I select an object with CTRL + C and then start a new page, or when I press CTRL + V within the same page, I get no response; it doesn't work. I don't encounter it all the time, but it's a very common problem. This problem isn't just for me; it can be a problem for other employees working with me.

There is a looooong list of third party applications that interfere with the clipboard.

DO you have any of these?

  • Parallels Toolbox running with the Clipboard History
  • LogoTech Keyboard management software
  • TeamVewer Clipboard > Use Shared Clipboard
  • Apple iOS device simulator from Xcode
  • Windows Multi-clipboard
  • Windows Clipboard History
  • Clippy
  • Chrome Remote Desktop
  • Mouse Pointer Highlighter
  • AnyViewer
  • Pastebot app
  • Overzealous antivirus (Digital Guardian) as well as viruses that empty the clipboard
  • Vector Magic

@Monika Gause, the list you provided only includes vector magic, so I'll remove that and follow up. As I said, it doesn't happen all the time. Thanks.

@Yaymat Grafik have you thought of just restarting your computer? It clears temporary glitches and resets the system's clipboard. Since the issue is intermittent, a fresh restart can often make copy/paste work again for a while.

Let me know if that works

@creative explorer Of course, I turned the computer off and on, this is not a problem that only occurs on the same day, I already wrote that this problem also occurs in older versions.

@Yaymat Grafik Unfotunately, I can't replicate your issues. In your post, there is no mention of 'occurs in older versions' — only, 'other employees working with me.'

Another thing you could do is run as an adminstrator or create a new user profile. Maybe it's a user profile configuration. If it works with the new profile or adminstator, then you know it's the profile then.

Also, in Windows 10 and 11 have a built-in Clipboard History feature that can sometimes get overloaded or corrupted with complex or large data. Hold the Windows key V to open the Clipboard History panel. Click the "Clear all" button at the top of the panel. This will clear the clipboard's memory without requiring a reboot. Test copy/paste. Or you can also try disabling Clipboard History entirely in Settings > System > Clipboard and see if that provides a more stable experience.

Furthermore, are yu using any other third-party apps may interfere with the copy and paste.  Temporarily close or disable these applications and test the copy/paste function immediately. If this resolves the issue, you may need to update the third-party app or switch to a different one.
