Why is it becoming more difficult to select paths with smart guides off?

Just curious. Why has it become more difficult to select paths with smart guides off? Even with the black square dot appearing on the arrow cursor, clicking in Illustrator frequently fails to select the line I’m pointing to. Yet clicking the exact same spot with the smart guides on, results in selection.

And while I’m at it…

Why does creating a new paragraph style with text selected most often (but not always) result in a style sheet that is missing font, weight, and color?

Why does the appearance palette frequently require me to deleselect and reselect an effect before the trash can icon activates?

Why does the swatches palette frequently require me to deselect and reselect swatches before the plus icon activates?

Why does changing stroke color of a selection containing both lines using arrows and lines not using arrows, result in all lines using arrows?

…why is Illustrator’s interface becoming less reliable?

Also, why does command-X sometimes require multiple doings to get selected text to cut? Frequently but not always, running the Cut command (always from the keyboard shortcut, haven’t tested the menu) with text selected (not the text box, nor the text selected as an object) results in deselection of the text, which remains, and nothing being copied to the clipboard. This is a new behavior, observed over the past few weeks.

Hi Creative Explorer, to answer your questions: “yes” and “direct selection” (not group selection). I’m glad to hear you have no issues, that sounds good for you. The paths in question are stroked, however this seems, in keeping with longstanding Illustrator selection functionality, to make no difference. Thank you for pointing out the beginner tutorials. However, what I’m describing are new behaviors, UI bugs essentially, that are in contrast to behaviors from years past. In particular, paragraph style creation became glitchy at some point in the last six months or so, although I would guess the change was even more recent.
