Why is my illustrator so slow/laggy?

Hello everyone!

I have a mac studio m4 since last year. And I can’t understand why it is running illustrator so slow. I am working on simple stuff and everything takes seconds to respond. :/

Here are my specs:

Apple M4 Max:
-64 Go
-Tahoe 26.5.1 (25F80)
-200go space free

Monitor:
Dell 27”

Illustrator 2026:
30.2.1

What should I do to have it working better ?

Where do you save your files? On the local disk?

Do you have any third party plugins?

How many fonts are installed? Is there font management? Have you checked all the fonts?

Do you use a Wacom?

Thank you very much for your quick answer, that’s greatly appreciated!

I store them on an external ssd drive, but i tried to work from the desk with the same file and experienced the same issue as well…

I have a wacom driver and everything but I usually work with a keyboard and mouse. (MX series from logitech)

I have no external plugins.

I have not much fonts installed and use the default mac font library.

If you don’t need it, can you try and uninstall the Wacom driver?

ALso: there has been trouble with some mouse drivers in the past. Do you still have a mouse that doesn’t need its own driver and can you try it out?
