Windows Illustrator trial: ungroup, color, select challenges

Using Illustrator trial and finding select, ungroup, color/fill not working. I’ve tried everything: top nav, Shift Select, updated Image Trace, right nav. Seems the imported image when “selected” by clicking on it shows a red box - I can’t seem to click on the vectored image (maybe vectoring via Image Trace wasn’t completed??). I’m in a class (with no tec support) so any help would be much appreciated.
