Word Art maybe...

I am new to using Illustrator so I'm trying to figure things out as I go. I'm creating a slide in picture frame with the word MiMi at the bottom. I want the word to be connected to the bottom of the picture window but still connected to the frame. I will cut this out using a laser. Any help would be appreciated.

    Easiest would be to create your word MiMi in the font you want. Convert it to Outlines. If any of your letters overlap, use the Pathfinder panel to Unite them into one shape. Draw your rectangle and send it behind your type (Object > Arrange > Send to Back).

    Move your type to align how you like it at the bottom of the rectangle. Then select both the type and the rectangle and use the Pathfinder panel to apply the Minus Front effect. This should subtract the type (which is in front) out of the rectangle (behind), leaving you with the shape the way you want. Apply whatever stroke you want!
