Workspace changed to white , need grey

How do i change the workspace (area around my artboard) area to grey? I'm using Illustrator CC latest version , 2021. TA

In the User Interface section of Illustrator's preferences choose "Match User Interface Brightness" for your Canvas Color.

I tried that but all it did was change the colour of the surrounding interface and not the canvas, which remained white.
