Question

Would be helpful to clear cache memory within the app, similar to Premiere and After Effects.

Illustrator, from what I’ve seen, does not have a button to clear memory cache within the app, similar to Premiere Pro or After Effects. I noticed some features stop working after extended use, like copying/pasting to an exact location (Ctrl + Shift + V) in Windows.

@Sten34102590ey88 a couple of years ago, my battery swell so much in my MacBook Pro, that one of my students noticed it )he was standing in an angle) and told me; I changed the battery at the Apple servie provider, and for some weird reason, everything was lagging from Adobe apps to Chrome; I then brought it an Apple Retail store to see, and they told me to manually delete the Preferences folders. At the time, I was leery, but they said once I restart my MacBook, a new set of Preferences will be created. I did doubt it, so I made a copy on my desktop and deleted the contents within the Preferences folder which contained 17 gigs! After I restarted, a new set of Preferences was created and is now only 394kb! That’s a huge difference. Of course, Apple was right, and I also deleted that Preferences folder on my desktop too. Computer ran as if it was brand new

I have often thought this would be useful but if I have ever seen a similar issue or lag, then a quit and reopen Illustrator is usually sufficient and doesn’t actually take much longer than the Purge option.

When features stop working after extended use it is usually caused by program-wide corruption. Resetting preferences can restore the program to its defaults and correct performance should return.

    To reset preferences on Windows:

You can try the quick way of resetting on a PC which is to hold down Ctrl + Alt + Shift when launching Illustrator and respond affirmatively when asked if you want to reset. There have been some recent reports that the window asking if you want to reset is not popping up but that the prefs are being reset anyway. If this works great but if it doesn’t you may have to manually delete them.

    To do so:

The preference files are hidden. To find them go to the Control Panel and open Folder Options and then click the View tab. Then select “Show hidden files and folders” or “Show hidden files, folders or drive options” in Advanced Settings. Then delete (or rename) the folder at the end of this path: C:\Users\[User Name]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator [version number]\ Settings\<Language>. Make sure that Illustrator is closed when you do this. When you relaunch the program it will create  new preference files and the program will be at its default settings.

The advantage of manually deleting preference files is that after you’ve reset up the program (make sure that no document window is open) to your liking, you can create copies of your personalized “mint” preference files (make sure that you quit the program before copying them—that finalizes your customization) and use them in the future to replace any corrupt versions you may need to delete.
