Wrong size while exporting png from Illustrator?

I have a work measuring 250x250px. I exported as png in Illustrator but the work was 1042x1042px. If I reduce 250x250px, the resolution is distorted. How can I output 250x250px without losing resolution?

Your pixel dimensions will only stay the same if you export at 72 ppi.

A pixel in Illustrator is 1/72 of an inch, that is what Illustrator uses when vectors (that don't have a resolution) are converted to pixels. If you set a higher resolution on export, Illustrator will create more pixels.

Resolution is just a number to indicate how many of the image pixels must fit into an inch.

You can change that number afterwards without changing the number of pixels.
