Question

You Must Click on a non-compound, non-masking path to create text along a path!

Hi everyone,  I am new to Illustrator and trying to keep on practicing,  I just have an issue in respect to trying to insert text using the "type on a path tool".  the image I used was from the "symbols" Arrows,  and was able to change colour but not able to add text.  Not sure how or what it means by click on a non-compound path.  When I scroll down on object on the tool bar then down to "compound" to release this is greyed out.  If any one can assist me very grateful.

    Caroline,

The path used for Type on a path is simply acting as a possibly curved baseline for the Type, and it disappears as soon as you succeed in using it, so if you also wish to still have stroke or whatever else visible, you will have to create a copy and use that for the Type.

Fundamentally, you will have to use a simple path, so you may delete parts to strip the path down.

Hi thank you for your reply,  I want to have curved text inside the actual curved arrow that I have created, as this hasn't worked I will create this in another package and paste it as a picture.  Thank you.

    No need to do that.

    Try this:

Copy the bottom line from the arrow, and paste it.  Use the newly pasted line for your text path; it will closely match the curve of your arrow, and you can then move the text into place inside the arrow.
