Thanks for sharing the screenshot and details. I'd recommend trying the solutions discussed in a few similar community threads where users have reported the same unknown error while placing or accessing images:

I also notice you're currently using the 2024 version of Illustrator. When you get a chance, could you please test the same workflow using the latest Illustrator version 30.1, as a related issue was addressed in versions after 29.1, and let me know if the behavior persists there as well?
