Gradient tool inconsistency

When using the gradient tool, sometimes I have to drag and click, and other times I just have to drag and release. There doesn't seem to be a rhyme or reason to when it will do one or the other. Other contextual details, I'm on a wacom tablet, so maybe it's a tablet/pen compatibility issue?
