Lost several hours of work

Question

Spent 4 hours on my subject selection.  I hit CNTL J  to create my selection layer (No chance I made a mistake and hit the wrong buttons) and Photoshop Beta closed.  When I re-opened it, all my work was gone.  The original layer appeared with the status bar stating "Recovered Layer".  This is the second time this has happened.  Release 026.3.0, Windows 11

Could you share any more about what your workflow was that you worked on for 4 hours, what sort of tools were you using, what was the work you were doing when the shutdown happened?

It may help if we could see your Photoshop beta System Info. Launch Photoshop beta, and select Help >System Info...and copy/paste the text in a reply.
