Pen Tool now auto generates shape layers. How to disable?

Rather frustrating, PS assumes I want to automatically makes my current layer into a shape layer when using the pen tool. I ONLY use it for creating mask shapes. It's making something thats already tedious have extra steps to disable it.

How can I get back to the legacy mode of it doing nothing automatically until instructed...?
