Where are you saving, what type of drive? External drive, network connestion?

A psd file, A3 poster not a large file. Crashes when saving to the internal SSD and when saving to the cloud. I am about to try saving to an external thumb drive but don't think that will work. Not a network issue. I have tried a few different wifi options.

Have you tried resetting the Photoshop preferences back to the factory defaults to see if that helps?

You can do that under the General Tab in Photoshop Settings (then closing and reopening the application).

I did try that but it didn't work. I finally found a fix.
What worked for me was holding shift while I launch photoshop.

The other way of resetting preferences:
Launch Photoshop and quickly hold down the following keys:
Windows: Shift+Ctrl+Alt
Mac OS: Shift+Control+Option+Command
When prompted to delete the Preferences, click Yes
(If you don't see the question repeat the exercise.)
