Selection Tool Weirdness

I expand the canvas (using the Crop Tool) and try to select a rectangular portion of the new white and a drop of the original image (to use Generative on). I sometimes get an error about "50% of the pixels etc... OR

the selection is an oval or an odd freehand looking selection.

 

Any ideas?

Here's one thought: if you are using the Rectangular Marquee and the selection is an oval, there may be a large feather. Look in the options bar and set Feathering to zero. If that's not it, show a screenshot.

Yep. That was it. I don't know how, but it was set for 200.
