Very laggy remove tool

My original post from a while back seems to have disappeared (or is not searchable at least).

Problem: any use of the remove tool causes very long lag (10-15 sec) no matter how tiny the area covered in the remove tool stroke.

The results are usable but the tool itself takes too long to use in a regular workflow. This isuue was resolved by installing the 24.7.0 beta for about an hour before it reverted back to the laggy behavior.

These are the things I have tried without success:

Restting preferences
Reverting to previous beta
Having only the layer being worked on visible
Switching between the two modes (commit after each stroke or not)
Switching from sample all layers or not.
Deactivating Native canvas and restarting

Granting full disk access to Phooshop beta.
Using different brush characteristics (build up or not etc)

This is so furstrating as the results it returns are fantastic, just that I have to wait forever for each stroke and that is not possible in my workflow.

Workaround so far is to disable the "committ after each stroke" behavior and paint over all the areas I need to be fixed, since a large area takes the same amount aof time as a tiny area. But the results are not as good, less area specific.

    I believe I have solved this issue, it is a bug that happens when the current pixel layer does not cover the whole canvas (i.e. if you show only the layer you are working on, you will see checkerboard somewhere.

    Solution: Fill the area.

      Yes!!! This worked! This has been driving me nuts ever since I started using the Remove tool and couldn't figure out why it was so slow some times and fast at other times. As soon as I filled the layer I was working on, it worked so fast!

        Tried with both settings with a restart in between. Same issue. 

         

        Unsure if the results differ so I left it on faster.

          Which setting do you have selected in Preferences > Image Processing?

          Does it help to try the other setting?

            Hi Cory, thanks for replying. Apologies I missppoke earlier. I had in fact previously (at your suggestion) manually removed and creatred a new set of default preferences. To no avail.

              Hi @bob_w@phnyc.com instead of resetting, let's try removal and creating new prefs:

               

              Let's make sure we're in a default state and there are no stale settings somewhere: 

              Restore your preferences using this manual method:  

              https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html#Manually  

              Does it work correctly? 

              If that doesn't solve it, you can quit Photoshop and put the Settings folder back. 

               

               

              It may help if we could see your Photoshop System Info. Launch Photoshop, and select Help >System Info...and copy/paste the text in a reply.
