20 minutes for "save as" PNG

Hello.

Since I began working in Photoshop a year ago, I have been working with PNG.

I sometimes save as jpg and even less as tiff.

95% of the time it's been PNG.

For the last week, when I

save as>save a copy>PNG>smallest size

It's taking 15-25 minutes.. perhaps more since I've used task manager a couple times to quit.

The issue started while I was still on the previous version of Photoshop.

I am currently on

Photoshop version 23.3.1

Windows 10

Nvidia 1070

HP

 i7 7700 3.6g 8 core

16 gig RAM

I work with panoramas a lot.

Despite the decent file sizes, I'd never experienced this until the last week.

I have read several posts in the forum that seemed related.

Their solutions haven't worked and one thread from several years ago says, "get used to it."

I think that's outmoded info though, because some of the people reporting slow save times are upset about 90 seconds to 2 minutes..

I'd sing hallelujah for a 2 minute save time at this point.

I have Reset preferences.

I have turned off GPU

I have unchecked "use compression"

I have flattened the image (was a suggestion in a thread. Wouldn't be a solution when transparency is needed.)

I have cleaned my hard drives.

I have attempted saving to different drives.

My main drive is a SSD with 400+ GB of space.

I have one more internal SSD with 110gb free and an internal hdd with 330gb free.

I also have an external hd with 4 terabytes free.

"Export as"

Is not an option since I am working in 16 bit.

Currently, the status bar is sitting at 94%.

It likes to sit there a lot.

And as I type this, I've just got the record for the longest save; assuming it saves at all.

The image is 10,800p by 5400p

That's about 2/3 the size of many of my older panos all saved as equirectangular panos.

Aaand.. 33 minutes.

At least it saved.

Why big PNG?

This isn't even full size. The resolution has been decreased.

The equirectangular projections are used both for 3d rendering and as print files.

My printer requests PNG because that's becoming the new standard as more and more people shop online.

The PNG file is used for web display and to print on demand when I have orders.

I get asked about it everytime I have a question while I'm working on a sRGB PNG.

For a bit I was convinced based on conversations in here that my printing company was dumb.. then I read an article on Best practices to prepare photos for print and it explained why sRGB PNG.

In any case, unless it's a limitation of the extension or container, why I want it is mute.

Most importantly, I want to discover what I may be doing differently to cause this.

Having reset settings, upgraded to the most recent version, and done full disk cleanups, I'm at a loss how it's suddenly become an issue.

In summary.

Save as>save a copy>PNG is suddenly taking 20+ minutes over the past week with my most recent successful save taking over 30 minutes for a 10,800 pixel by 5400 pixel image.

(I also just reduced the file size from 333m to 89m by changing the resolution to 5400x2700 and it's been 10 minutes still saving.)

I appreciate support to either resolve this or get confirmation it's the same suddenly for everyone.

Here are the results on a larger file 13374x5857 flattened
Tiff .25 sec 448mb
PNG smallest/slowest 28minutes 355mb
I am moving on to the next project and will return soon to see what's next.

I'm grateful to hear from you, @davescm

I have reset the preferences and now had 2 updates to PS since the issue began and it continues.

I use PNG 16bit files because it's what the printer requests. Actually he'll take JPG and then "polish and resize" them. Which is why I choose lossless instead.

I appreciate learning more and having options, so much obliged.

And I still want my Mtv.. I mean PNG. Currently it's needed as a transparency for web and print and the printer could want to make adjustments.

Anyway all the details of why aside, here are the details of the save settings, I think.
Saving an 8 bit 400x2250 sRGB PNG
Save a copy>PNG>sRGB checked> Selecting "smallest file/slowest save"
just now took 1 minute 40 seconds.

a 16bit 1621x1080 in Prophoto RGB (checked for save) on slowest save/smallest file just took 3 minutes

I did smaller files so I wouldn't have to wait 20-30 minutes.

That is the preferences for file handling.

Above in the thread, I ran some kind of report that was requested.
I've also disabled 3rd part plugins and different tech previews.. all suggestions made in this thread.
All to no avail.

LRC is exporting 16bit PNGs and 8bit PNGs at the usual speed. ie there is no trouble in LRC.
Photoshop doesn't SEEM to have any issues with exports or saving as other formats.

It's just when I select "Save a copy" so I can get a 16bit PNG. (Or save a copy for 8 bit png, but at least that I can simply choose "export" instead.)

What PNG save settings?

I just ran a couple of tests on a 10800 x 5400 flattened image file with 16 bits/channel

TIFF no compression 0.3 seconds to save with a resulting filesize 341,743KB

PNG Large (Fastest save) 23 seconds to save with a resulting filesize 180,524 KB

PNG Smallest (Slowest Save) 81 seconds to save with a resulting filesize 163,697 KB

If you have seen a sudden increase in save times - try resetting your preferences (Preferences >General > Reset Preferences on Quit). These contain more than just the user settings and, if corrupt, can cause issues. They are not necessarily reset on a reinstall.

As an aside, for posting images on the web, then an 8 bit good quality jpeg is better (just don't try and use it for re-editing). The same file converted to 8 bit and saved in 1.5 seconds and gave a 19,070KB file - which will give users a much faster download on the internet. A first high quality jpeg saved from the original is difficult to tell apart. You might also consider reducing the size as , when viewing on screen there are few screens with 10,800 pixels width so your image would be downscaled when viewed. Again that would result in a faster browsing experience for users.

@CShubert
I hope you all are doing well. I took a break from the issue for a bit. Now it is time to find a solution that doesn't require working around micky mouse's ears.
At this point everthing seems to work except it still takes a million years to save as PNG in Photoshop. It does not take time like that to export the 16 bit PNG from lightroom. What I'm currently working on did not originate from LRC so I'd have to to ass tiff or something to a catalog then export.

I hope it doesn't seem unreasonable that I would much prefer to be able to save as a PNG effectively from within Photoshop.

Hi all. At one time I saw it mentioned the engineers were working on this. I took a break from the frustrations, used the workaround of opening the image back in LRC to save it as the PNG I needed.
Mostly just chose to work on videos with Davinci Resolve instead of deal here.

Then I got a graphic design client. I suppose I can save as a Tiff and then go import it into LRC.
What I would very much prefer is for Photoshop to save my PNG file in a timely and efficient manner.
Should I start a new thread? Are y'all done attempting to help?
I am not sure how to proceed. I imagined I would be asking you all to pardon me for not replying to you sooner, yet it turns out no one has offered any further solutions. That's kind of shocking to me.

I remembered my other point from last night.. I uninstalled and reinstalled PS to no avail.

Disabling the GPU compositing and multithread compositing did not resolve the issue.

@J453 Thanks. I'll do it because it won't hurt.
I'll also say pardon me as my communication wasn't clear.
The issue began several days BEFORE I updated PS. I hoped the update would resolve it and it did not.

@Hunter Wade The only things I can think of that changed in 23.3.0 and 23.3.1 were some compositing changes. Let's try disabling those settings to see if that makes a difference:

  1. Go to Preferences > Performance... and uncheck Multithreaded Compositing - and restart Photoshop. Does the problem persist?
  2. Go to Preferences > Performance... click Advanced Settings... and uncheck "GPU Compositing" - then restart Photoshop. Does the problem still occur?

Geewiz.. Again with the disappearing "flagged" posts.

I'd just mentioned that opening LRC and exporting a 14000 by 4000 pixel PNG in sRGB took 35 seconds.

I think I made another point that seemed pertinent though I do not remember as I grow weary.

Catch yall soon. TY mucho.
