21.2 Major Issues with Layer Mask and Healing Tools

Just updated to 21.2 and now nothing is working.  First I was using a mask layer and when painting black it will not show what is being eliminated from the mask.  Toggle it to white and it seems to start working, but only for a second.  It's as if PS is holding on to versions as I'm editing, but not removing those versions.  Very buggy.  

Then when trying to use the healing tool it would do the same, either not show up, or leave behind very hard lines rather than blending in per usual.  

I've tried rebooting, I've tried resetting the preference to no avail.  Some of my masking will show up only after I hide each layer and bring them back.  I have a magazine to design and edit. Please help!!!
