Adjustment levels - auto on a selection

I use Photoshop 2024 on Ventura. If I select a portion of an image and click adjust levels - auto, I get a different adjustment than when I apply the same command to an image made from just that portion. Why?

Could you please post screenshots taken at View > 100% with the pertinent Panels (Toolbar, Layers, Properties, Options Bar, …) and dialogs visible?
