Adobe CS5.5 Cannot Use Calculations and Color Selections

I am trying to create luminosity masks in CS5.5. Neither the calculations function nor select color and then select tones work. With calculations, as soon as I activate it I get a sigle polorized black and white filter overlay that is not editable and it just freezes computer, I cannot create a new layer and all menus in PS are grayed out. Same thing happens with color selections. I tried reinstalling PS and re-runing all the updates, but to no avail. Appreciate any input.

What operating system are you using?

I would reset the photoshop cs5 preferences as described below

    https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html

To restore preferences quickly using a keyboard shortcut:

    • Press and hold Alt+Control+Shift (Windows) or Option+Command+Shift (Mac OS) as you start Photoshop. You are prompted to delete the current settings. The new preferences files are created the next time you start Photoshop.

Note: Using the keyboard shortcut, preference files for custom shortcuts, workspaces, and color settings will also be reset to default.

    Jeff,

Genius! The keyboard short cut didn't work, but watching the video and following instructions on moving those preference files so I could start clean worked like a charm. Grateful for the input. Thank you!

    Jeff,

I am using Windows 10 in answer to your question, neglected to indicate that. Again, thanks very much.
