Adobe Photoshop 2019CC Classroom in a Book/Chapter 3/Anti-Aliasing & Feathering Question

I am on Chapter 3 of the Photoshop 2019 Classroom in a Book. On page 3, there is a highlighted section entitled "Softening the edges of a selection." I have watched videos and downloaded the tutorial instruction for executing these options, and am still struggling to see the results from the exercises I have performed on the classroom shadow box. Question: Will the tools of anti-aliasing and feathering be covered in later chapters for the student to perform, or is this the only chapter where it is covered? I am sure my difficulty is due to operator error, but I just wanted to know if it is covered later on as a practical assignment.

Sincerely,

Hi, I'm one of the authors of the book. I searched through it, and Chapter 3 is the only place where anti-aliasing is discussed with regards to selection, but anti-aliasing is covered in other sections; for example, anti-aliasing is an option when rendering the edges of text. Feathering is discussed in some later sections because it's an option for various tools. Photoshop is such a deep program that it's hard to talk about every subject at length; as an introductory book it's already over 400 pages long. But if that part of the book isn't working for you, maybe we need to improve it.

Do you need more information on how anti-aliasing and feathering work, or how they're different from each other? They are similar, so it can be a challenge to understand the subtle differences between them.

Blimey Conrad.  That's a pretty cool thing to drop into a conversation.   Having read that I was interested to check your profile and onto your instagram page, and you also have some pretty damn decent pictures on it.

Thank you for the kind words, Trevor! I was honored to be asked to help update the last few editions of the Photoshop Classroom in a Book, so naturally if I see a question about it here in the forum, I try to answer it.
