When I use the can of paint/paint bucket to paint a certain region of my picture it doesn't just paint that region but also a part of the border. Could anyone explain me how to fix this, please?

Uncheck "Anti-alias" in the Option Bar on top and let us know if that works.

Also experiment with the Tolerance settings. Dial it down to 20% or less until it doesn't grow into the black pixels.

Generally speaking, it is better to use a new layer while building the graphic, and flatten at the end.  This avoids issues with anti-aliasing.
