Question

Adobe Photoshop CC (2018) crashes display when opening PSD files

Hi,

I'm experiencing an issue with Adobe Photoshop CC (2018) when trying to open PSD files. When opening a PSD file, the display of the machine crashes as all I can see is a black screen and no error messages, which results in me having to perform an emergency reboot on my machine in order to get any sort of functionality back.

My PC specs are the following:

PC Model Name & Number: Dell Optiplex 3050

CPU: Intel Core I5-7500 3.4 GHz

RAM: 8 GB

Graphics: Intel HD 630 1 GB (integrated graphics)

Storage: 500 GB HDD

OS: Windows 10 Pro

So far I've looked through the forums and have already tried disabling 'Use Graphics Processor' under performance and under Camera Raw Preferences which fixed the issue by only a short period before it started happening again. I've also tried lowering the amount of RAM that the program uses to around 4 GB and on top of this have ensured that the Intel HD 630 has the latest driver but atlas this hasn't made a difference.

Is there anything else that I can try that might help? Also since making these changes I've lost the ability to export files as well.

Thanks in advance!

Hi both, looks like it's been working fine since my last update. Fingers crossed it stays like that!

It started working after clearing preferences and then setting the preferences as seen in my recent screenshots.

Thanks for your help!

Have you looked at the details in the crash reports? CC 2018 randomly crashes on my Dell workstation but PSD can normally be processed.  I think my problem is related the the GPU support for my old quadro 4000 display adapter do not know for sure look at what module is failing on your system.

Hi JJMack,

I've checked the reliability history from the latest test today and got a few processes failing at the same time but surprisingly not Photoshop.

However when checking an error from a few days ago there was an error reported but I can't say for certain that this occurred when Photoshop crashed.

Hi

Have you tried resetting Photoshop preferences

If that doesn't help try uninstalling/reinstalling using this method

Use the Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems

Hi Ged,

I reset the preferences this afternoon after your comment and tested it again. It did crashed stating that there wasn't enough RAM but that was because it reset the memory usage under the performance settings. I adjusted it so it's using 3981 MB of RAM and have set the Graphics Processor to basic as seen in the below screenshots

I've also ensured left the graphics processor unchecked under the Camera RAW preferences and now opening PSD files seem to be working without the application or my machine crashing, also exporting seems to work again. I've known this issue to come back within the next day or two so we'll see if it happens again. Thanks for your advice on this!

What's the policy on keeping threads open? As I might need to keep this open in case anything happens on Monday. Can I reopen the thread again if it's closed?
