Question

Adobe "resets" my shortcuts everytime I update

Come on Adobe! It takes lots of effort to set my preferences, and everytime Adobe updates my Photoshop, it resets my shortcuts! Is it a kind of joke? Anyone has the same problem? I just fresh installed a new Windows + Adobe thinking was an issue from my previous installation, now I realized it's a Adobe thing.

I have also been getting frustrated with my extensive list of custom shortcuts getting wiped when updates are run, even though they are saved as a set and I have the 'import previous settings' checked. Hence why I ended up here looking for a fix! I recently exported a copy of them to a folder in my Dropbox so I could also use them on my new laptop. After reading this thread, I was in the edit keyboard shortcut screen on my main computer seeing if I could reinstall them from these as they had just been wiped again after an update over the weekend. What I did notice was that they were were actually still there in photoshop but it had reverted back to the photoshop default set during the update. I thought I'd add this in here as it might be helpful to someone! (although not as helpful as them not getting messed with in the first place!)

Keyboard Shortcuts - When you update major versions, you need to make sure you have Import previous settings and preferences checked to retain the previous settings and preferences for the updated apps.

If you did not migrate your settings and preferences, you can locate the folder for the prior version and move them to the new version. It's also a good idea to create a back up. See the section Backup Photoshop preferences here: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html

They are already set to import previous settings and preferences. It doesnt work. My keyboard shortcuts also get reset.

@J453 I too have this issue after choosing import previous settings/preferences. It may not be every app, every year but it happens regularly after yearly updates - Photoshop 2024 being the latest.

Is there a way this could be automated? It's 2024, the future is here!

I'm finding this happens not even when I update Photoshop but when the Creative Cloud app notifies me that their are updates available.

It resets ALL preferences, not even simply keybaord shortcuts, my toolbar customizations are reset also.

I could forgive the notion that my preferences get reset after I update said application and especially when switching to a new version, but the fact that it happens every time Creative Cloud pulls down any small patch, even before installed just means that this can happen multiple times a week and always at an arbitrary time in which I as the user have no say over when my preferences will be reset.

If I knew when my workspace was going to be thrown out I could, for example, save my workspace changes before every update, but this happens without warning and it's incredibly irritating.

I would have thought disabling auto-update would have prevented this but it happened again this morning and now I'm irritated enough to be talking about it in a forum.

It would be a simple matter to reset your keyboard shortcut if  you save them. Keyboard shortcut can also be change when you switch  workspace. depend on how work spaces as set up.  You should save you Keyboard shortcuts sets. Particularly if you download and install Actions and Scripts the can change things one you.

It makes sense. But I did save my shorcuts. That's the real thing here. Few things that should be easy Adobe makes a real fuzz about it, and I'm not the first person to complain about it.

I'll try saving again and see, in a near future, what Adobe will do with my presets.

Thanks for your answer btw!
