Just had an email from Alien Skin with an off of Eye Candy 7 for $69, or $39 as an upgrade if you have an older version.

I paid $99 for it years ago, and it was $130 last I checked.  I use  it so much I'd pay a  fair bit  more  for it if I had to, and I really wish there were other similar plugins available.   I have Filter Forge 7, but I  don't use it nearly as much as Eye Candy.

I once had their "Bokeh" plugin, which - unlike Photoshop's Lens Blur - was very realistic and virtually indistinguishable from the real thing. No, out-of-focus blurring is nowhere near a simple gaussian blur. It's an incredibly complex optical phenomenon that Photoshop has never been able to even come close to.

Then they incorporated it into an expanded "Exposure" suite, which again bloated into what is now apparently intended as a full Lightroom competitor. They lost me as a customer long ago. I don't need all that.

But the point is - they apparently know what they're doing. So for those into special effects, this has to be a good deal.

That is not a bad offer.

Glad to see that they are still around.

But I am honestly surprised that Adobe has not purchased them and integrated it into Photoshop.  I mean this company has been around for awhile.  It is so great for fire, smoke, lightning and various effects.  One would think that they would have been acquired by now.  Or at least that it would have been integrated into the software.

The price is pretty good.  I might have to think about it.  Because I do not have any effects like that right now.  Have not had them for years.  Granted they do not fit into my workflow 100% now, but it would still be fun to have.

Even people like Steve Caplin uses Eye Candy 7, because it saves him time.  The Chrome effect is one I have seen Steve comment on.  As for Adobe buying out Alien Skin, I  can't think why that would be any more likely than them purchasing Topaz Software, On One, NIK (too late for that one) etc.

The nearest plugin to Eye Candy is Kai Power Tools, which was ahead of its time, but was bought by Corel who got bored and stopped developing it.  Or more likely Kai Krause got bored with it after Corel bought him out, and without his help they didn't know what to do with it.  There is a  bit of a clue in this long thread on the Feedback site where at least one RC (Relentlessly Clueless) poster refuses to understand Chris Cox's uncharacteristically patient explanations.  Reading between the lines, it sounds like the KPT code was a  bit  untidy and took a few shortcuts.    That's a real pity as  I'd pay serious money for the full KPT suite that waorked reliably on 64 bit Photoshop versions.

It's a similar story with the Flaming Pear plugins.  They produce nice results, but the UIs are hopeless.  I've written to them suggesting I'd be willing to pay for updated versions, but didn't get a reply.  No surprise there.

Noel's Starfilter Pro 4 got a few recommendations in another thread  today, and that is an excellent example of  how a plugin should work.   Real kudos to Noel for the quality of the UI and the way it works.  Adobe have said he can continue developing and marketing it  (in his own time of course) but he is  the sort of  person Adobe has done well to hire.  I had a conversation with Noel last year about the power of the GPU.  He was enthusiastic to say the least, really gushing about how much number crunching power a GPU has compared to a CPU.  I don't know if he was using it just for his astronomical software, or also with Starfilter Pro.

Anyway, if you are into any sort of illustration and graphic design, Eye Candy 7 is a godsend.  It does a lot of things better than Photoshop, and does them very quickly and easily.  I was pleased to get it for US$99.  At US$69 it's a steal.
