Any way to merge blend modes and retain their appearance in Photoshop 2019?

Hey folks,

I've read around a bit and have found that merging blend modes often changes the appearance of the layers after they are merged, which can be undesirable, as it is in my case.

I have this textured image comprised of several layers I'm trying to merge into one layer:

The image is made up of 3 layers:

Keep in mind it is sitting on a pink background, which I am not showing because I don't believe it is important.

When I merge the layer above set at a 50% opacity & Divide Blend, it turns my image into this:

What can I do to prevent this? Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance for any help given.

Good question Nancy.

I'm trying to remove some of the image, using a soft round eraser. It would be easier to do this sort of work on a single layer, rather than on 3.

Would it work to add a mask to the layer group, and paint black in that to "remove" (hide) the parts you don't want?

Hi Nate,

To preserve the blending mode effect in Photoshop, could you try selecting all three layers and then convert them into a smart object to see if it helps?

After selecting the Layers go to Layer on top and choose Smart objects and then Convert to Smart Object

Thanks for the suggestion Sahil. Unfortunately, this did not work.

Why do you need to merge the layers?  Can't you just Group them and retain their blending modes.  Or maybe I'm missing something....
