Question

Apple Pencil Pro Double-tap to switch tools is only one-way?

Hi. I'm working on an iPad Pro M4 with the Apple Pencil Pro. I set Photoshop for iPad to switch to last tool when I double-tap the pencil. When I double-tap, it will switch to the previous tool. But when I double-tap again, it stays on that tool. For example, I use the brush tool, then use the dodge tool. Double-tapping switches back to the brush tool, but a second double-tap doesn't switch to the dodge tool. I've tried this with other combinations of tools too, with the same result. I would expect it to work like it does in Freeform, where repeated double-taps on the pencil switches back and forth between the current and previous tools. Is this the expected behavior in Ps for iPad? Or am I missing something? Thanks!

That’s an interesting observation. From what I’ve seen, Photoshop for iPad usually treats the double-tap on the Apple Pencil as a quick switch to the previous tool, but it doesn’t always toggle back and forth like some other apps do. So what you’re experiencing might actually be the intended behavior rather than a bug. It can feel a bit inconsistent compared to apps like Freeform where the toggle works both ways. Hopefully Adobe improves this in a future update because a true back-and-forth switch would make the workflow much smoother.

Hey @Ambree34140895ek24

I’ve moved your post from bugs to questions.  In Photoshop on iPad, the Apple Pencil double-tap action can be customized in App Settings → Input → Double Tap.

If the action is set to “Switch to last tool,” it returns to the previously used tool but may not always behave as a continuous back-and-forth toggle depending on the tool sequence. If you’re looking for more predictable behavior, you may prefer “Switch to eraser.”

You can learn more about the available double-tap options here:

If this doesn’t help, please let us know. : )

Switch to eraser is the same - it only works one way. It works fine in Fresco and other apps.

I’m having this problem too. Double-tap only works one way, if I switch to eraser it won’t switch back to brush.

Can we get this sorted please? No other app has this problem.
