Win 11 v25.11.0 French UI 64GB RAM Core i9

Having difficulty with editing the Layer Mask automatically generated by the Edit > Auto-Layer Merge command? I want to demonstrate editing the mask with the Brush tool to my students but, for some reason, it does not "work"?
When I manually create the Layer Mask, I can edit it all I want. But not that mask? I can "brush" it and I can see the change in the Mask thumbnail but nothing visible happens on the document window? So weird.

Does the Layer Mask generated by the Auto Layer Merge have some "special, hidden" properties? That prevent further editing?
I searched everywhere in the interface to no avail.
Perhaps a Preference?
Thanks for your kind help in advance.
I'll continue searching online in case...

Correct answer Roger Breton

I tried a vew other "variations" of the command options, combined with different layer configurations. I finally understood how the command works but it's far from "intuitive" but that's my opinion. I'll present it as a worthed option to explore as its behavior, I'm sure, do wonder on certain images combinations but, as a starting point to learn layer masking, that's not where I would put all my eggs...

I think I got it!!
"Somehow", the command "burns" in the masked image into the underlying layer.
Is there a way to avoid that behavior?
I tried unchecking the two options in the command dialog box to no avail.
I must be missing something...
