Auto-select in Photoshop CC selects layers within locked or hidden groups

i can't be the only one who thinks it's nuts that when 'auto-select > layers' is selected and i drag to select a bunch of layers, i also select layers that are turned off and/or locked, can i?

i just confirmed that this IS not the case with CS6 -- locked or hidden layers are not selected upon dragging to select exposed layers.

is this a bug, or a bit of new functionality that i am failing to grasp? i did notice that in CC, on right-click there is the new option to "isolate layers", but this seems to just isolate & unclutter layers within the layers panel.

i would greatly appreciate some insight and possible solutions to this issue.

thank you.

Has anyone seen a fix to this yet? I'm experiencing the same annoying problem.

I've turned off the "auto select" and am using the Command Arrow trick, but that's a extra step in the workflow. I'm also having issue with the Type Tool selecting type many layers and folders below the selected text I've trying to edit. It appears as though the text tool selects text in priority of size not layer. This is driving my nuts.

I still have this problem - it's driving me mental!

It seems like things are getting a bit off track here. The main issue was this: locked layers with a group would be selected by the Move tool with Auto-Select Layers enabled. This was fixed a couple years ago with an update.

Let's clarify the actual issue you each are encountering. First, Mauricio, you mention you are having trouble selecting locked layers. You should not be able to select locked layers with the Move tool, this is precisely what it means to lock the layer.

Todd, if you hare having trouble with layer selection while using the Type tool, please create a new post on that issue as it would be unrelated to this thread.

Steph, please clarify the issue you are encountering as well as what version of Photoshop you are using.

If you're reading this, you'll never have to check the auto select box again. Just found this shortcut with the move tool. Reposting for any lost souls out there that continually click and unclick that box like I used to.

cmd + click takes you straight to the clicked layer!!!

I'm seeing some new, perhaps buggy, behavior with auto select as well. Not sure if I should chime in here or make a new post, so I'll try here first.

Before, in CS6 when I was using the move tool with auto-select checked, I could click on an element of my design, say the label of a button, and PS would, well, select that layer.

Now when I try the same thing in CC, PS selects the top-most containing folder/group of the clicked element.

e.g. In my layers panel I have Header > Button > Text

When I click on the text in my design, the header folder/group is highlighted/selected in the layers panel. In CS6, PS would select the actual text layer, as I would expect.

Anyone else seeing this? Maybe some setting that I'm missing? Or more likely, a bug.

Elbowlbstercowstand, you might have groups listed in the autoselect area of your move tool option bar.

Jordan, I'm not an adobe employee... And I said that they (Adobe employee) cannot give a shipping date, as Adobe is a publicly traded company, but we can discuss it...

But talking to the engineers would just have put more delay on the update...

Very dissapointed after paying for CC yesterday, that I can't drag select layers incase I make unwanted amends to other hidden groups or locked layers. PLEASE FIX ASAP!

Hey, as everybody here, i have a lot of trouble to work with this new feature which in my opinion does not make any sens. I am also very surprised that such a serious company like adobe does no do anything to fix it even after 2 months of complains all over the web. What do we have to do to get an official answer and a fix ? Is it that difficult to make that new feature optionnal ? Please do something quick.

Hello, Whynotblue. I understand your frustration if this problem breaks your workflow. Did you try the suggestion in post 8?
Also, you had an official answer in post #9, but an Adobe employee: "But we do see in the Feedback site (the place to report bugs) that this has been reported and logged and is being worked on. But, as always, we can't talk about future releases." (emphasis mine)

That means that the fix will be out once properly tested to make sure it does not create other issues. Also, we can get from the feedback site that there are several bugs being worked on.

Hello PECourtejoie,

What you suggest in post 8 might be a good alternative for some case but often when you grab layers with autoselect to move them quickly, it s pretty rare that they are located all in the same group. I am working mostly on web design projects and as many web designers i structure my group of layers depending of the architecture of the website. so the cmd+click trick is rarely relevant, but thank you for helping us finding other options.

I think we are all pretty frustrated because we usually have very good product from Adobe. But since two versions Photoshop is getting more bugged. For example, I updated my photoshop from CS6 to CC to avoid a recurring bug, this one : http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/font_style_size_problems

This bug annoyed me during month and when they finally released a fix, we realized that this bug migrated to tracking. so, let me be a bit suspicious about the fact that the fix will be properly tested to make sure it does not create other issues

and also, as a lot of people said, the bug of autoselection is a MAJOR bug so i am pretty surprised that after two months, nothing has still been released to fix it.

sorry for my broken english.

Is there an expected date for this to be fixed?  Really don't want to have to download Photoshop CS6.

I have the same problem. It is impossible to work with this. I have like 60 layers! I hope that they will fix this soon!
