Question

Background layer is lost

When using Photoshop 2020 i get a background layer when I open the file but if I do something like crop as soon as I move the border the background layer disapears and is replaced by a new layer. I have tried copying the background layer to see if that works but they both get compressed into the new layer.

This has only happened since yesterday it has always worked before. I don't think I have adjusted anything different.

Any ideas please.

Clive

"does not allow you to refine the crop later which I could always do in the past."

Later? You mean after cropping the image? AFter 5 minutes or two days? It was never available option if you have Background layer. Ability to change or re-crop the image is available with Smart Object layer because that layer can not be cropped and with Delete Cropped Pixels unchecked what will convert Background layer to normal.

At the left side of "delete cropped pixels" you have the settings (gear) icon. If you choose below it "use classic mode", then you will work in the "classic way" with seperate layers...

Yes in the Crop Tool options check Delete Cropped Pixels.

Thanks that does the job, the only problem is that it does not allow you to refine the crop later
which I could always do in the past.
I just wonder why this has changed, is it an update that has gone wrong?
