Question

Bigger file size after combining jpg's

When I look at the file size of all my jpg's in Finder, it's about 8,9 MB in total.

However, when I combine them into one single jpg (by putting them on a grid) using Photoshop,

I suddenly get an exported jpg file size of 64,4 MB!

Does anyone know what happens here and what I can do about it?

Details:

- Each jpg is 1024 x 1024 px, about 200 kB large and already 10% compressed

- There are 47 jpg's

- The grid is 8 x 6 tiles large

- The combined jpg is 8199 x 6149 px large (I put a single pixel space between each jpg) and 64,6 MB large (???)

Many thanks in advance!

If you are generating the graphics do NOT save them as JPEG from Blender. Double JPEG compression can do terrible things.

Your terms for use with JPEG quality don't seem to be right. There is no such thing as "10% compression" or "full quality". The argument "each jpg was already compressed, so no need to add more compression, right?" is tempting but completely wrong. When you read the JPEG into Photoshop it is completely uncompressed. It has to be compressed all over again, causing more damage. ALL graphics programs will work this way, so I repeat my advice: do NOT save as a JPEG from Blender.

Got it. The thing is that I already exported jpg's out of Blender when I thought of putting them on a grid to make the filesize even smaller.

But what is the solution for this problem? Do I have to export each texture out of Blender again and then choose a different format? I don't see how that can decrease file size...

What JPEG quality did you choose? The original size is irrelevant.
