Black to white gradients flip flop

I'm using Photoshop 2023 on a Mac and when I use the basic black-to-white gradient, it flip flops. Most of the time it works with black to white, but sometimes it flip flops to white to black. How do I keep it from doing this? And no, I'm not changing it around.

    I have a couple of questions that may help us to sort this out. When this happens:

    • Are you using a black-to-white gradient  or foreground-to-background gradient?
    • What are the colors for your foreground and background swatches?
      Type "D" to reset them and "X" to switch.
      Does it make a difference?
    • In the options bar, is your mode "Gradient" (new) or 'Classic Gradient"?
