'blend if' instructions

Can anybody please tell me where to look in the Photoshop User Guide for written instructions on how to use the blend if sliders. I've watched tutorials demonstrating its use and often come away wishing I could clarify certain aspects by reading up on it, but haven't been able to locate it in the guide. Thanx in advance.
