blend modes not working

i was doing a youtube thumbnail like i use to then i saw the layer blend modes arent working normally i usually use lighten and screen but both are not working normally . normally they have to make the picture semi transparent but its not working i tried everything resetting the preferences restarting my pc reinstalling photoshop unchecking things i read from other bug reports from preferences none of them worked please help me guys
