Blending modes of placed .psd files

I have a 2 layer photoshop file - 1 layer is product image (blend mode normal) 2nd layer is the same product image with a shadow (blend mode multiply). When I place this file into another Photoshop file, the multiply blend mode of the 2nd layer is not respected. Is the expected behavior from Photoshop?

Yes that is expected - the blend mode of layers within the smart object only applies within the smart object. So the layers within the SO are blended as per the individual blend modes then the result is effectively presented as a pixel layer.  The entire smart object can be set to a blend mode  with other layers in the main file.
