"Bluelighting" a photo

Hi all,

I am working on a project in the subject of mystery for a web design class. Long story short, I intend to use a candid photo of the sky, and include a flock of birds in the photo. However, the flock of birds will be hidden and only visible under certain "light" (or effects in photoshop). This is my primary idea, as they will just see a picture of a sky and be left to decrypt. My secondary idea is to present what be what appears to be a blank canvas, and only the adjustments of certain effect settings will reveal the photo.

We are an introductory class with medium knowledge of Photoshop. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

If I'm understanding correctly, you could do something like this:

Two layers.

Sky layer set to Normal mode.

Bird layer set to Lighten mode.

The image looks like this -- the sky must be lighter than the birds!

Change the layer mode for the birds layer to darken. The image looks like this:
